On cloud nine-ty!

It’s a big birthday year in 2022 with Warner reaching a 90-year milestone. Dedicated anniversary breaks at every hotel promise lots of extra sparkle with party bands, dancing, raise-a-glass cocktails, gifts and untold history to unearth.

Where it all began

When Harry met Billy

Captain Harry Warner was born in Kennington, South London, and joined the Royal Artillery as a boy in 1906. During the First World War he served in Turkey and was also commissioned in the field during the Gallipoli campaign.

When the war ended, he was posted to barracks in Winchester, then Ireland, and met his future wife Tizzy Stokes. Their love of Hayling Island’s Beachlands was cemented when Harry spotted a gentleman nailing a hand-painted ‘for sale’ sign at a beach café. He would go on to serve one more year in the military and have enough money from his army pension to take as a lump sum to buy ‘Grotto Café’.

On a day trip to Bognor Regis, he had a chance meeting with a man named Billy Butlin on the hoopla stall. They talked business and struck a deal for Billy to purchase the bulk of the land around Harry’s café to operate his funfair. So began plans for the first Warner holiday centre.
